DAM & PIT LAKE SAFETY
Tailings Water Management
Our automated mechanical evaporation solutions are proven to help deliver the safe, reliable management of Mine Affected Water (MAW) in Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) around the world.
It has long been recognised that the effective management of MAW in tailings dams represents a significant safety, environmental and commercial priority for mining operators with these important facilities designed to store wastewater, a by-product of the mining beneficiation process.
With an estimated 3,500 TSF operations around the world, the need for effective water management is clear and present. On average, 3 of these tailings dams fail each year with incidents over the last 15 years on the rise. Although the current failure rate represents a small percentage of the overall number of dams, these occurrences can lead to significant environmental impacts and even death.
Aside from the high costs of building and maintaining TSF operations, with construction and ongoing inspection cost on the rise, mining operators are also exposed to further risks with the potential for unmanaged water to leach into local ecosystems causing untold damage.
However, the safety, environmental and commercial risks of tailings dams can be mitigated by the implementation of a water evaporation system, designed to remove excess water, reducing dam water levels and ensuring compliance with global standards.
MINETEK has built significant expertise in this space developing the world’s largest and most cost-effective land and floating/pontoon-based evaporators. Our solutions are automated and designed for all TSF applications including upstream, downstream and midstream sites and available for use across all commodities including gold, copper, zinc, coal, cobalt and oil sands mines.
