Larger or deeper mines may necessitate multiple return airways or additional Booster Fans to manage airflow effectively. For instance, mines in Australia can circulate between 450 and 900 cubic meters of air per second (about 15,900 to 31,800 cubic feet per second) through their main declines.

Secondary auxiliary fans are smaller and more portable, making them effective in areas where airflow might otherwise be stagnant. These fans are critical components of ventilation systems, helping to regulate airflow throughout all working areas of a mine and enhancing overall mine safety.

Minetek’s Raptor™ Secondary Series Fan is 8.2 ft (2,500 mm) shorter and 2,866 lbs (1,300 kg) lighter than the industry-standard Twin 110 kW (approximately 147 HP) fan, making installation significantly easier and safer. It consumes 50 kW (approximately 67 HP) less energy than the standard twin model while maintaining comparable performance. The fan features a single-stage motor, which is more energy-efficient than twin-stage fans, and an aluminum impeller commonly used by competitors, making the Raptor™ ventilation fan both efficient and effective.

Its smaller and lighter design allows for easier installation in tighter spaces, providing versatility in deployment. Additionally, the ability to lift the fan as a single unit—compared to the two-piece requirement of Twin 110 kW / 147.5 HP fans—simplifies both relocation and installation. Ventilation doors

  • Monitoring and Maintenance: Regular inspections and air quality tests are mandatory, with records maintained to ensure compliance (30 CFR 75.371).
  • Corrective Actions: If contaminants like carbon monoxide exceed 50% of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV), operators must increase airflow or reduce equipment use (30 CFR 70.1900).

Canada

In Canada, ventilation regulations are managed at the provincial level, with Ontario and British Columbia having robust frameworks:

  • Ontario: Regulation 854 (Mines and Mining Plants) under the Occupational Health and Safety Act mandates mechanical ventilation systems to deliver at least 0.06 m³/s per kW for non-certified diesel equipment, as per CSA M424.2 standards Ontario.ca. Section 252 requires adequate ventilation systems, while Section 183.1 specifies airflow requirements for diesel equipment. Non-ventilated areas must be barricaded and monitored for oxygen levels below 19.5% (Section 255).
  • British Columbia: The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, Part 22, requires ventilation system designs to be pre-approved by the Board, with a minimum airflow of 15 m³/min per m² of working face area (Section 22.19) BC Laws. A qualified person must oversee ventilation, and auxiliary fans must ensure adequate airflow at the work face (Section 22.21).
