This water <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">holds<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> highly polluting substances such as lead, zinc, iron, mercury, and cadmium.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Acid or wastewater is often stored in a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/minetek.com\/application\/tailings-water-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tailings Storage Facility<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (TSF), as it has the potential to poison downstream waters and destroy already fragile ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/february-2025-la-nina-update-la-nina-today-gone-tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) <\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">forecasting a La Nina to continue in 2025, managing acid or wastewater on active and mine rehabilitation sites is more critical than ever. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">More rainfall and flooding seriously threaten industries in the Northern Hemisphere that use water and tailings dams. If your dam or tailings facility is already close to its limits, prepare before the next heavy deluge hits. The 2025 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eos.org\/thelandslideblog\/chambishi-tsf-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">TSF failure in Chambishi, Zambia<\/a>,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and the 2024 <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/minetek.com\/en-au\/resource-hub\/news\/jagersfontein-tailings-dam-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jasgersfontein disaster in South Africa<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> are reminders to manage dams effectively and TSF in operational and legacy mine remediation sites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conventional treatments of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/minetek.com\/en-au\/acid-mine-drainage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">acid water\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">include various physicochemical methods, which involve excessive use of chemicals and capital.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/minetek.com\/solutions\/water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Water evaporation<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has emerged as an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative for the remediation of abandoned or closed mines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s estimated that\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">over<a href=\"https:\/\/worldminetailingsfailures.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a032,000 tailings dams are<\/a> located across operational and legacy mine sites worldwide. Organisations such as World Mine Tailings Failures call attention to the\u00a0<\/span>threats and risks of poorly managed and designed TSFs.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Abandoned mines and TSF failures can leach harmful toxins into the soil and water, polluting the environment and posing a risk to human health.
