Turn-key sound attenuation solution to reduce Caterpillar 793 D haul truck noise at a Hunter Valley coal mine.
The Caterpillar 793 D is a sizeable off-road hauling machine used predominately within the mining industry due to its capabilities of hauling large amounts of ore, coal, and other minerals. The CAT 793 D dump truck has a powerful engine that allows it to climb steep grades and carry heavy loads over long distances, with an engine and transmission combined to provide a maximum power output of 1,743 kW – 2337 HP and a maximum speed of 64 km/ph – 33 m/h when loaded.
Caterpillar’s rugged design boasts a heavy-duty frame, providing superior support and stability, while the hydraulicallyactivated transmission ensures smooth shifting between gears. Operator comforts include a spacious cab that is ergonomically designed, providing a comfortable seating position that reduces fatigue over long shifts and an automatic climate control system.
Industry – Pertambangan
Mine type – Open-cut
Mineral – Coal
Location – Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia
Product/Scope – Sound attenuation on 4 x Catepillar 793 D dump trucks
Brief
Minetek was commissioned to design and manufacture a turn-key Sound Attenuation solution for 4 x Caterpillar 793 D machines in the NSW Hunter Valley.
Challenge
Reducing machine noise levels can increase operating hours, resource recovery, carbon emissions and stakeholder satisfaction. This project was aimed at reducing machine operating noise down to the site noise level targets without compromising machine integrity, airflow, maintenance and access ability.
Solution
Minetek conducted sound testing to confirm the noise output of the Caterpillar 793 D dump truck, with the machine emitting a sound output of 124 dBA before attenuation. With Minetek's Sound Attenuation Solutions installed, the CAT 793 D now operates at a low noise output of 114 dBA, which is a total sound reduction of 10 dBA. Minetek's Sound division is synonymous with the world's quietest mining machinery. Reducing diesel machinery noise levels by up to 50% and allowing mining operations to reduce potentially harmful safety impacts on operators while meeting regulatory and community noise expectations.
Pre attenuation
124 dBA
Minetek tested the sound output of the Caterpillar 793 D before attenuating this machine. This registered a sound frequency level of 124 dBA.
Post attenuation
114 dBA
The sound output of the Caterpillar 793 D was tested after installing Minetek’s turn-key sound attention package. This registered a sound frequency level of 114 dBA.
Sound reduction
10 dBA
Minetek was able to reduce the sound output on the Caterpillar 793 D dump truck by 10dBA
